Three Northwest Films at Edinburgh International Film Festival
Three feature films from the Northwest have been
selected to be screened at this years prestigious Edinburgh
International Film Festival in June.
K I
C K S is a compelling tale about two teenage girls
obsessed by celebrity and fame. It is written by Leigh Campbell
directed by Lindy Heymann and produced by Andy Stebbing. The film
features a fresh ensemble of new acting talent led by Kerrie Hayes,
Nichola Burley and Jamie Doyle. K I C K S tells the story of two
teenage girls who bond over a mutual crush on a Liverpool
footballer. As their friendship develops, the relationship and
chemistry between them becomes increasingly powerful, fuelled by
their dreams of wanting something out of their reach. When things
go too far their fantasy quickly descends into a nightmare.

Salvage is the debut feature film from UK
director Lawrence Gough, written by Colin O’Donnell and
produced by Julie Lau. The film features an exciting British cast
led by Neve McIntosh, Shaun Dooley, Dean Andrews and Linzey Cocker.
The gripping story takes place when a storage container with
mysterious contents washes ashore, and the residents of a
cul-de-sac are plunged into a horrifying world of violence, terror
and paranoia. Quarantined by the military and ordered to stay
indoors, a single mother must overcome all the odds to save her
daughter.
Salvage is to be screening on

A BOY CALLED DAD
A Boy Called Dad is the story of 14 year-old Robbie, who has just become a father. Abandoned by his own dad he snatches his baby son and goes on the run, forcing both dads to face up to the past and what fatherhood really means. It features Bury-born newcomer Kyle Ward in a naturalistic performance as Robbie. The film also stars acclaimed Liverpudlian actor Ian Hart in one of the lead roles. Steve Evets, star of new Ken Loach feature Looking for Eric is also among the cast. A Boy Called Dad was made in partnership with Northwest based production company, Made Up North, Film Agency Wales and East Midlands Media.
The film is written by Julie Rutterford and is the debut feature by director Brian Percival. Both originate from the Liverpool and their short film About a Girl won them the Best Short Film BAFTA and joint first prize at Edinburgh in 2001. The film’s producers, Michael Knowels and Stacey Murray from Made Up North have also co produced a short at this years festival called Curtains directed by Julian Barratt and Dan Jemmett.

Head of Film for Northwest Vision and Media, Tara Cook, comments on the region’s presence at the festival, “I am delighted that three great Northwest films have been selected to be screen at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival. It is such a prestigious event within the film industry calendar and for each of the films to be selected demonstrates the enormous capacity for making films here in the Northwest. Northwest Vision and Media are also very proud that Lawrence, Kerry, Kyle and Leigh have been selected as this years Trailblazers and will be representing the high quality of film talent the region has to offer.”
Salvage, K I C K S and A Boy Called Dad which were all funded by regional screen agency, Northwest Vision and Media, will be shown during the exciting twelve day festival that takes place from the 17 – 28 June 2009. In addition to this, three cast and crew members from all three films; Lawrence Gough (director of Salvage), Kerrie Hayes (lead actress in K I C K S), Kyle Ward (lead actor in A Boy Called Dad) and Leigh Campbell (writer of K I C K S) have been chosen as Trailblazers for the festival this year.
Trailblazers is a joint initiative between the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) and Skillset showcasing new UK filmmaking talent. Each year Trailblazers are selected from the festival’s new British Film Programme as well as students and graduates from Skillset's Screen Academy Network. Out of the ten Trailblazers selected three come from the Northwest.
There will be events throughout the festival to celebrate the Trailblazers, including the opportunity to view their work in the festival’s Videotheque. Previous Trailblazers include BAFTA Nominee Sam Riley who shot to fame for his portrayal of Joy Division front man, Ian Curtis, in Control and Nichola Burley who stars alongside Kerry Hayes in K I C K S.
Northwest Vision and Media, who work on behalf of the creative and digital industries in the Northwest to grow a world-class creative and digital economy within the region, funded both Salvage and K I C K S though its Digital Departures scheme in partnership with the Liverpool Culture Company, BBC Films and the UK Film Council. The competitive project awarded three film makers £250,000 to make a feature film in Liverpool. The third film to be awarded funding was Of Time and The City by legendary British Director, Terence Davies.
